Why we care

1. Because of Charlie and every individual who is farmed

For anyone who's ever spent time with a pig, chicken or cow, we know they have just as much personality and emotion as the dogs and cats in our families. And they all want the freedom to play and explore, to be with their family and to grow old. Just as the RSPCA protects animal companions, we believe it's time they also protected the largest group of animals who are suffering the most – animals who are farmed. The RSPCA can only prevent cruelty to all animals when it promotes a move away from farming and killing them.

  • The majority of farmed animals are confined in crowded, stressful conditions their entire lives.

  • Newborn babies are taken from their mothers, causing untold trauma.

  • Billions of animals, just like Charlie, are killed every year in UK farms and slaughterhouses.

2. Because of the planet

Whether we're a human, dog, pig, cow, chicken or fish, we all share the same home. And that home is being destroyed by farming animals.

  • Ancient forests are being chopped down to farm animals and grow food for them.

  • Waterways are being choked and polluted with waste from animal farms.

  • Farming animals is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Farming animals is destroying the homes and lives of other animals, like badgers, birds, fishes and bees.

3. Because of humans

Farming animals doesn't just harm fellow animals or the planet – it harms all of us.

  • Farming animals increases antibiotic resistance and the risk of more pandemics.

  • Animal-based foods aren't required in our diets and are a significant contributor to chronic disease.

  • Farmers and slaughterhouse workers experience alarming rates of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and physical injuries.

  • Many factory farm and slaughterhouse workers are immigrants who are unable to find other work.

We’re taking action for all animals, the planet and other humans.
